The company has continued
to expand its network in the past year due to
increasing consumer demand in its licensed area
of operations and is constantly striving to achieve
increased efficiencies of performance. The Government
has also promulgated The Electricity Act, 2003
which will bring about deregulation in a phased
manner in the power sector. The facilitating provisions
of the new Act will present new opportunities
for growth by enabling the company to enter new
areas and increase its customer base. The Gujarat
Electricity Board (GEB) has invited bids for franchising
of distribution circles. The company, being a
highly efficient power utility has taken this
opportunity and has bid for the same.
The enactment of the new Electricity Act will
also enable the company to optimize its cost of
procuring power. At present, the company’s
generation capacity is lower than the peak demand
of its license area. Hence, the company is importing
power from the Gujarat Electricity Board to meet
this shortfall. However, with ‘Open Access’
& ‘Power Trading’ now feasible
under the new environment, the company will now
be able to source alternative cheaper power. Also,
the provisions of the Act will enable generating
stations to sell power directly to consumers which
may open up an avenue for competitive purchase
and sale of power.
