One who epitomized this maxim best was Torrent Group founder, Shri U.N. Mehta. Throughout his life, he believed in the noble, uplifting power of business ambition, its ability to transcend the odds and spread benefits. This was the vision that stayed steadfast as he started building a formidable business empire from truly humble beginnings.
Starting his career as a government clerk in 1944, Shri U.N. Mehta soon entered the private sector with a job as a medical representative with the multinational drug giant, Sandoz. Health concerns later required him to give it up and set up a pharmaceutical venture with seed capital of just Rs. 25,000. Soon, he was marketing anti-rheumatic medicines manufactured by another firm.
Small first steps that paved the way for one of the biggest names in the pharmaceutical industry today. Recognizing his immense contribution towards its development, the government conferred upon him the “Businessman of the Year Award” 1996-97.
Shri U.N. Mehta left us in the year 2000, but his legacy of perseverance, endeavour and trust endures. |
